What is diabetes?

More than likely you know somebody who is living with diabetes so it is important that you understand the disease even if you don’t have it.

Diabetes is an unremitting disease that can often persist for an entire life time.  This is a serious
disease which can affect your entire body and if left untreated it can affect almost all of your
bodies organs.

For our bodies to work properly we need to convert the sugar (glucose) that we consume into
energy.  A natural hormone called insulin is essential for our body to convert sugar into energy. Unfortunately for people living with diabetes their body no longer creates insulin or enough insulin, so when they consume foods high in glucose it can’t be converted into energy.   Instead the glucose stays in their blood system and causes the body to burns its own fats as a substitute. Left untreated dangerous chemical substances build up in the blood from the burning of fat.

There are two types of diabetes:

Type 1- Usually occurs in childhood or early adulthood.  Their body no longer creates insulin
so the treatment is lifelong insulin injections.  People living with type 1 diabetes must test their blood glucose
levels several times a day.

Type 2- Usually occurs later in life, often over the age of 45. Their body makes some insulin
but not enough to work effectively- their treatment is controlled by a healthy diet and lifestyle.

High blood pressure and cholesterol are other conditions that people living with diabetes can also suffer from - Increasing the risks of a heart attacks or strokes.

Symptoms of diabetes include…

  • Fatigue
  • Increased thirst
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Numbness/tingling in the feet
  • Irritability
  • Slow healing

Please see your doctor if you suffer from any of these symptoms.
