New Year Resolution #1 Quit Smoking
Every year at New Years many people make the resolution to give up smoking. Great!!! Wonderful!!! So let us help you put this plan into action and get you ready for the 1st of January!!
There are many ways you can try to quit and everyone is different with regards to what can work for them. Not everyone is successful at their first try at quitting and it can sometimes take a few tries, so don’t feel alone if you don’t quit on the first go.
NICOTINE PATCHES
Nicotine patches release a steady stream of nicotine over the course of a day to help reduce cravings. As the weeks go by you reduce the strength of the patches until you are able to go without them.
The main difference in patches is that there is a 16 hour & a 24 hour patch. The 24 hour patch is designed to help those that suffer cravings first thing in the morning when they wake. While the 16 hour patch helps to reduce cravings during the day, while giving your body a break at night for those that may suffer side effects such as sleep disturbances with the 24 hour patch.
If you are smoking more than 15 cigarettes a day it may be worth considering using a pre-quit patch for 2 weeks to increase your chances of quitting.
For directions on how to use the patches and for further information about which patch strength would work for you please just ask our friendly staff in-store.
NICOTINE GUM
Nicotine gum gives you the flexibility to adjust your dosing schedule and control your cravings. There are 2 strengths available, 2mg and 4mg and they come in several flavours. By using gum you can gradually cut down on the number if cigarettes you are smoking until you are completely smoke free.
Nicotine gum is not like ordinary chewing gum in that you don’t need to chew it constantly. With nicotine gum you are required to chew it until the taste becomes strong & then place it between your cheek & gum. When the taste starts to disappear then start chewing it again and repeat the process until no taste can be recovered.
When using nicotine gum be aware that it is a maximum of 10 pieces of 4mg gum per day and a maximum of 20 pieces of 2mg gum per day.
For help with choosing a strength that is suitable for you and for further information please just ask our friendly staff in-store.
NICTOINE INHALER
The inhaler is a flexible way to control your cravings while also keeping your hands busy. The inhaler is a small plastic tube that you place a cartridge in containing nicotine. When you require some nicotine to help with your cravings you place the inhaler in your mouth and suck through the mouth piece. Each cartridge should last you about 20 minutes of continuous inhalations and on average when first quitting you may go through 6 to 12 cartridges a day. The full program to quit with the inhaler is about 16 weeks, depending on how many cigarettes you smoke a day on average.
For more information regarding how to use the inhaler and if it would be suitable for you, just ask our friendly staff in-store.
MICROTABS AND LOZENGES
Both microtabs and lozenges can be used similar to the gum for controlling cravings. Both of them can help provide quick relief from cravings to help you stay in control and stay smoke free.
Lozenges also come in 2 strengths, a 2mg and a 4mg. The recommended program sees you follow a 12 week step down approach. The lozenges are easy to use and dissolve completely in your mouth, but do not suck, chew or swallow the lozenges.
Microtabs are to be placed under the tongue and slowly dissolve. Like the lozenges it is not recommended to chew or swallow the microtabs.
