Rosehips
DEFINITION
Rosehips is a herb with the botanical name of Rosa canina is associated with the Rosaceae family of plants. The fruits of the herb contain several important constituents including vitamin C, pectin, tannin, fruit acids and a fatty oil.
INTERACTIONS
Herbal supplements can alter the effects of certain drugs, including prescription medications. Always tell your Doctor about any prescription medications, non-prescription medications, herbs or other dietary supplements you are taking. There were no major drug interactions reported for Rosehips at the time of writing.
MEDICAL USE
Always consult your Health Care Professional to advise you on dosages and any possible medical interactions.Rosehips contain vitamin C although the vitamin C content decreases with time, drying and depends on the degree of coarseness of the Rosehip product (the coarser the product the greater the vitamin C content over time). Some Rosehip supplements may contain added vitamin C from other sources. Because vitamin C is thought to improve immunity against infection, it is proposed as a treatment for a number of conditions, including the common cold. Impractically large amounts of Rosehips must be consumed to treat a true vitamin C deficiency, however, and the vitamin C content of dried, commercially available rose hips products varies considerably.
Rosehips have also been used traditionally for mild constipation, kidney stones and coughs .
PROPERTIES
Vitamin content, mild astringent and a mild diuretic.
NOTES
No side effects have been reported for Rosehips except allergic reactions in people with a high exposure to Rosehip dust.
