Relieve symptoms of sinusitis

What is sinusitis?

Sinusitis is an infection or inflammation of the sinuses caused by too much mucus or swelling in this area of the nose. All year round, sinusitis can be triggered by cold, allergies and even activities causing irritation to the sinuses, like swimming in chlorinated pools.1

Symptoms of sinusitis may include:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Blocked nose
  • Pressured headaches
  • Malaise, tiredness
  • Limited taste and limited sense of smell
  • Limited hearing
  • Persistent cough
  • Aching teeth in the upper jaw

There’s four types of sinusitis 2

  • Acute. Symptoms last less than 4 weeks and get better with the right care.
  • Subacute. This type of infection does not get better with treatment at first. Symptoms last 4 to 8 weeks.
  • Chronic. Chronic infection happens with repeated or poorly treated acute infections. These symptoms last 8 weeks or longer.
  • Recurrent. If you have 3 or more episodes of acute sinusitis in a year, it’s called recurrent.

Some people are troubled by sinusitis frequently – either acute from an infection or as a chronic, long-term condition and your Discount Drug Stores pharmacist or health care professional can help you find the right treatment for you

What can cause sinusitis?

Sinusitis can be linked to allergies or cold and flu, but there’s also certain factors that may increase your susceptibility to sinusitis, so if you suffer from sinusitis it’s important to discuss any risk factors with your pharmacist or healthcare professional.

Risk factors may include:

  • Frequent colds
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Regular use of nasal sprays
  • Untreated allergies or hayfever
  • Swelling in the sinuses or lining of the nose (Nasal polyps)
  • Dental disease or untreated tooth abscesses

Your Discount Drug Stores pharmacist will help you find a unique treatment plan for you based on your symptoms, health concerns, and treatment factors. If symptoms persist you may be referred to your GP for further investigation.
