Discount Drug Stores is proud to offer the lowest price guarantee on all your prescriptions. This is why we are happy to pass on the $1 discount on the Government funded Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) to our customers. Additionally, our pharmacists can help you optimise your Safety Net benefits with our Medication Care Plan to make sure you are getting the best deal possible.
What is the $1 discount?
The Australian Federal Government determines a co-payment price for Pension, Concession, Veteran and Health Care card holders for medicines subsidised under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Since 1 January 2016, legislative changes were introduced to allow pharmacies to pass on an optional discount of up to $1 off the PBS patient co-payment amount and every Discount Drug Store is happy to pass on the full $1 discount to you.
From 1 January 2019, the PBS concession co-payment amount is $6.50, therefore if you agree to the optional $1 discount at your preferred Discount Drug Store, you will only pay $5.50 for your subsidised medicine. The PBS patient co-payment amounts may change each calendar year, please speak with your pharmacist after 1 January 2020 to be advised if any changes have occurred.
Do you pass on the $1 discount?
All Discount Drug Stores are committed to passing on the full $1 discount on your PBS subsidised prescriptions. Our pharmacists can also assist you to optimise your Safety Net benefits with our in-store Medication Care Plan.
Will the discount affect my Safety Net Threshold?
The PBS Safety Net Scheme was designed to protect patients and their families requiring a large number of PBS or RPBS subsidised medicines. When a patient reaches a pre-determined dollar amount within a calendar year, known as the “Safety Net threshold”, they qualify to receive subsidised medicines at a reduced price or at no charge until 31st December of that year.
With the $1 discount, the amount required to reach your Safety Net threshold remains the same. If you take up the $1 discount on prescriptions, it may take you longer to reach your Safety Net entitlements. Our pharmacists are able to help you calculate whether the $1 discount will benefit or affect you reaching the threshold, and will advise on the most cost-effective option for you.
Our Medication Care Plan Calculator is a tool which can be used to determine how long it will take to reach your Safety Net Threshold, and if taking the $1 discount may impact this. It is designed to help you decide which option will benefit you the most and the financial cost of your medicines.
Is the discount mandatory for all pharmacies in Australia?
The discount is a non-mandatory government initiative, meaning other pharmacies may not offer the discount. However, all Discount Drug Stores are proud to pass on the full $1 discount to our customers.
